Meanwhile back at the ranch -- upper Iverson Ranch overview

'Meanwhile back at the ranch' is a continuing series about "rock stars" (landscape features) on the old Iverson Movie Location Ranch in Chatsworth, California.  For more information about the Iverson Movie Ranch see: http://a-drifting-cowboy.blogspot.com/2011/10/iverson-movie-location-ranch-chatsworth.html

We'll start our overview of the "upper Iverson Ranch" with a look at the 1950s aerial photo above.  Starting at the far left edge you'll notice a tree-line running north to south.  That tree-line was the separation boundary between the Iverson Ranch to the east and the Brandeis Ranch to the west.

Just inside the tree-line on the left side of the photo you can see a wide, oak tree studded valley with lots of trails running in all directions.  That valley was the most heavily used filming area on the upper ranch, and you've seen it in hundreds of  Western chase scenes.  On the east (or right side) of that tree-studded valley there is a rocky ridge-line that rans southwest to northeast.  That ridge-line was only about 400 yards long, but it contained some of the most significant "Rock Stars" on the upper ranch.  In future posts I'll show you photos and tell you about them.

Those "Rock Stars"--Medicine Rocks, Eagle Beak and the Molars, Lookout Point, Indian Head Rock (not Indianhead that's on the lower ranch), Slates, Turtle Rocks, Whale Rock and Ambush Pass--are all in the photo above.

Go back to the 1950s aerial photo at the top.  Moving east from the tree studded valley there were a number of trails on adjacent ridges, and a hill in the lower left center of the photo.  That hill is known as Cactus Hill.  Look at the photo below and you'll spot two water tanks that were added when the ranch was developed into a gated residential community.  Look carefully and you'll notice many of the old trails still exist in the same configuration.

In today's world the gated community (large estate sized homes and lots) is known as Indian Falls.  It is accessed from Santa Susana Pass Road via Iverson Road going north, or from Topanga Canyon Boulavard via Poema Road going northwest.  The community is not open to the public and you can't get in without an invitation.

Look back at the photo at the top of the post, and you'll see another wide valley on the far right (the trails appear almost white in the photo).  That area was where a ranch set once existed.  In todays world the red-roofed Summerset Village (luxury rental apartments) has replaced the ranch set which was sometimes called the Middle Ranch.

In future posts I'll show you lots of movie stills, and you'll learn about the many sets on the upper ranch.  Included among them were a Stone Cabin (in a hidden valley), a Miner's Cabin (complete with mine), and the Ranch Set which included a three sided house, bungalow, bunkhouse, barn, and a couple of shacks.

Stay tuned…

Reel Cowboys of the Santa Susanas -- Sunset Carson

Sunset Carson (1920 - 1990) was an American B-western cowboy star of the 1940s.  He grew up in Texas where he became an accomplished rodeo rider in his youth.  He briefly worked in a western show owned Tom Mix, and in the early 1940s traveled to South America, where he competed in rodeos.

Because of his appearance and horsemanship Republic Pictures changed his name to "Sunset Carson," and signed to a contract to do a series of B-western films.  Within a couple of years he was one of the top-ten B-Western money makers in Hollywood.

He and his horse named "Cactus" starred in a string of western genre films, but after a dispute he and Republic parted company in 1946.  According to stuntman Yakima Canutt, Carson had attended a studio function drunk and accompanied by an underage girl, and studio head Herbert Yates fired him.

In later years he played roles in several minor Westerns.

Robert Livingston (1904 – 1988) was an American actor and B-Western cowboy star. He made over 135 films between 1921 and 1975.

Meanwhile back at the ranch -- lower Iverson Ranch overview

We'll start our overview of the "Iower Iverson Ranch" with a look at the 1950s aerial photo above.  Starting at the top center (moving clockwise) I'll describe the features that once existed on the ranch.  The heavily treed area at the top center was the residences of the Iverson brothers.  Aaron's home was demolished when the freeway was built, but Joe's house (further south) still remains.

East of the residential area you can just make out the Western street which ran (more or less) in a north-south direction.  North of the Western street was an open plain known as "Sheep Flats."

East of the Western street you can make out a horseshoe shaped corral.  East of the corral was the Cave Rocks area which included Lash's Archway, Split Rock, Hook Rock, Cave Rock and others.  In fact, if you look at the third panel from the left (photo above), the rock--left of center--is Hook Rock.

Going back to the aerial photo, the area south of the corral is the Grove (it still exists).  South and west of the Grove were the Southern Chase Roads which included Vultura's Pass, Outlaw Pass, Hangover Rock and Karl and Augusta's place (aka the old folks home) which was lost to a fire in 2008.

West of the Southern Chase Roads (south of the Iverson residences) was Zorro's Cave, Bill Rock, Bulldog Bluff, Hole in the Wall.  There was also a narrow flat canyon (with Overhang Rock and others) that was lost when the Cal-West Townhomes were built.

Traveling west from Hole in the Wall you'd find Nyoka Cliff and beyond that (further west) was the Iverson Gorge.  To the west of the gorge (very difficult to see on the aerial photo) was the Garden of the Gods area which included Overlook Point, Garden of the Gods, Phantom Rock, Keaton's Bathtub, Saddle Rock, Saddlehorn Rock and others.

North of Garden of the Gods there was a stagecoach relay station and barn.

The photo above is a look at the lower ranch area today.  As you can see the Ronald Reagan freeway cut through the ranch just north of the Western street area which was located in today's Indian Hills Mobile Home Village (top right corner).

You can spot the pool in the mobile home park--it's surrounded by the formations known as cave rocks.  South of the mobile home park you can still see the Grove and southern chase roads.

The tan colored roofs (center left) are the Cal-West Townhomes.  Find the big hair-pin curved road to the left center of the photo--the open space south of the condominiums inside the hair-pin road is the Garden of the Gods.  Further west is Rocky Peak Church.  Northeast of the Garden of the Gods (within the town home development) is Three Ages Rock, Crown Rock and Devil's Doorway.

I'll leave off with a look at Chatsworth from Overlook Point as seen above in a series of screenshots captured from Law of the Ranger (1937).
